Could it really have been over 8 years ago, already? Yeah, it could. One Fret Down, our family band -- Ray, me, Manuela, and Dahlia (minus only our youngest, Nadia) -- formed in 2000 to sing at my local church. As I explained in My (Past) Religious Alter Ego I was actively involved in Messianic Judaism at the time. Meaning, my kids were in Hebrew school and I was at the church every time the doors opened.

Since my husband was desperate for a hobby that was family-oriented, and he'd had asperations to being in a band, we began our wobbly entrance into that world by occasionally performing our own music at the church.

Ray was pretty much the heart of the band. He operated the sound board, guitars, and percussion soundtracks, and music. I wrote the lyrics and sang. Manuela played the keyboard and sang. And Dahlia sang. From the beginning, we had a distinctive sound -- kind of 60s folksy, beatle-ish -- and it was evident in everything we created. As I evolved out of Messianic Judaism (and faith, entirely), the topic of songs also changed. These are the ones recorded and available.

Several years ago, Ray decided he didn't want to do it anymore, and since he was the backbone of the whole endeavor, that was that. Nothings been written since, which is too bad because we weren't bad. Part of the problem was venue. Since we couldn't perform in bars (our kids are underage), that gave us no place to exhibit. I think it discouraged him. Another part was all-encompassing role. He couldn't just play lead guitar, he had to play bass, second guitar, create the percussion soundtrack, create the music for the lyrics, etc. It was too much stress -- especially after a day of stress at work.

Maybe, someday, we'll take it up again. Unfortunately, with our kids growing up, it won't be too long before our band members have flown the coop. Then, well...it'll be hard to convince them to return for band practice.
