Blizzards are rare in Ohio. We have them once every decade or so and looks like this was the year. It started snowing on Friday and the weathermen were predicting 5-10 inches of snow by Saturday evening, so Ray and I got off work around 1:30pm. Thank goodness we did. It was already a sloppy mess and it was promising to get much worse. As usual, the weathermen didn't get it right. We didn't get 5-10 inches. We got over 12. And with the drifts, we ended up with snow up to our thighs. We hunkered down on Saturday and didn't move until Sunday morning. When we went outside, it was beyond belief. Beautiful, pristine, and really, really high.
I took pictures Friday, more on Saturday, and then again on Sunday. Most of the photos here are from Saturday. Hand plowing the drive was on Sunday. It started with trying to get out of the house. Our side steps to the drive were covered in over a foot of snow. The cars in the drive are barely visible, except for bits of the upper tires. Since I was the crazy woman wanting to take pictures on Saturday, I had the honor of cleaning off the steps to get outside.
I took dozens of photos but I've just chosen a few of the more interesting ones for this article. Take a peek at the house. It looks like it's in a frozen tundra. Snow got inside the screens and stuck to the siding. I thought it was a cool effect. What wasn't cool was having to plow out the drive on Sunday.
I checked up and down the road for anyone with a plow or tractor and couldn't find anyone. Then I tried to call someone to come over and dig us out. No luck. I walked down the road and questioned a neighbor about helping (I offered to pay) but he said he tractor couldn't handle the driveway if we hadn't already worked on it Saturday). Then I got ahold of a friend to help us out, but his equipment was down.
Dahlia, my middle child, was getting stir crazy at being stuck in the house so she started hand plowing the drive. In no time at all, she'd gotten my vehicle free and was working her way down the drive.

Ray got ambitious at that point and decided we'd all handplow the 126 foot drive (WHAT?!!!) since Manuela had to get to school and work on Monday, and we had appointments. He'd made one long strip to the end of the road when our neighbor came out and saw us struggling. Thank goodness he had a snow plow attachment on his tractor. He'd cleaned up the drive within an hour.
Free at last. Free at last. Thank god we're free at last. So what did we do to celebrate?
Heeheehee. We all clomped back inside and turned on Supernatural. We spent the rest of the day watching season 4 on dvd. (By the way, I had totally given up on TV so becoming addicted to Manuela's boxed set of Supernatural dvds was a real thrill to for me. Over the past few weeks we went through 4 seasons and I'm now almost up-to-date with the actual TV show. I just need to watch the first 13 episodes of season 5.)
I wouldnt' feel right showing all the negatives about such a beautiful snowfall without showing the beauty of it, as well. I already gave you a hint of it on the introductory photo. So here's a picture of the snowfall out our back door.
Enjoy. And stay warm.
